Flower Garden:
Plant Alpines for spring and early summer flowers
Plant gladioli’s in a sunny part of the garden in well-drained
soil
Prune Forsythia after flowering
Prune Buddleias and Dogwoods (cornus)
Feed all plants in the garden to improve plant flowering and growth
Remove dead flowers from spring bulbs and feed them to promote next
years bulbs
Trim daffodils and other bulbs once the leaves have gone brown
Begin spraying roses against pest and fungal diseases
Protect tender plants with fleece on frosty nights
Fruit and Vegetable Garden:
Start a spray programme on fruit trees and bushes to control pests
and diseases. Be especially vigilant for mildew on gooseberries
Plant strawberries as soon as possible
Plant potatoes, onion sets and garlic if not already done
Many more vegetables can now be sown either under glass or directly
in the garden
Lawn:
Re-seed or re-turf any bare areas
Spread lawn fertiliser or combined weed and feed
Keep cutting the lawn gradually lowering the cutting height
Greenhouse:
Plant tomatoes in unheated greenhouses towards the end of the month
Sow marrows, courgettes and sweetcorn for planting out in May
Spray regularly for whitefly as soon as they appear
Containers:
Towards the end of the month empty winter containers and prepare
for summer flowering plants
